Sean Buckley looks back at Culminate

From Racing Post

Formerly-trained by Stephen Mckee, the New Zealand mare has been transferred to Weir after being purchased by prominent owner Sean Buckley, CEO of Ultra Tune, for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase of Culminate came after her solid performances in Queensland during the Winter carnival where she ran creditable races behind Black Piranha and Melito in the Stradbroke Handicap (6th) and Winter Stakes (4th) respectively.

Culminate’s main goal this campaign will be the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 30.

It is hoped Culminate can further add to her impressive black type record during the spring. The rising seven-year-old is a multiple Group winner in New Zealand which includes a victory in last years Group 1 Otaki Maori (1600m).

Her most notable performance in Australia came when she finished runner up behind Typhoon Tracy in the 2009 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill.

Sean Buckley’s Culminate wins Group Two Harrolds Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield

Ballarat traine Darren Weir picked up the lion’s share of $180,000 when his mare Culminate claimed the Group Two Harrolds Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Culminate Horseform brought solid form from New Zealand to Queensland during the winter carnival and was honest enough when beaten in both the Group One Stradbroke Handicap and the Group One Winter Stakes.

However, Culminate resumed from a spell for Weir with a fair sixth beaten 3.7 lengths behind Palacio De Cristal in the Group Two Blaze Stakes, so it was no surprise to see it go out at double figure odds on Saturday.

What was in her favour was inform jockey Michael Walker, who had already ridden a winner earlier in the day and a wet surface. A combination of those two and the absence of Hot Danish or Palacio De Cristal made a winning difference.

Walker had the mare settled just off the lead on the inside from barrier two and then made sure he saved plenty of ground in the heavy going.

In the straight Walker asked Culminate for her best effort and she responded well. Clearly not concerned with the soaked track, she kicked for home the staved off late challengers to score a hard fought victory.
