Sean Buckley: A look back at Miss Andretti!

Millionaire businessman Sean Buckley had modest hopes for Miss Andretti when he bought a majority share in her as a tried horse.

She had won nine races in Western Australia in 15 starts, including three at stakes level, so Buckley sent her to Victorian trainer Lee Freedman in the hope he could get her to be competitive at a similar level in Melbourne.

Her former trainer in Perth, David Mueller, retained a 25 per cent share.

“When we bought Miss Andretti we were really hoping to capture one or two black-type races,” Buckley said.

“Lee kept saying she might win a Group race at some stage.”

The mare has gone on to win eight of her 10 starts for Freedman, four at Group One level, but it was her victory in the Group Two King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot that Buckley declared “his greatest thrill in racing”.

“Royal Ascot is just an extraordinary experience,” Buckley said.

“The crowd, the track and just the atmosphere here. You have to be here in the mounting yard to really understand it.

“You simply take your hat off to Lee Freedman. He’s one of the best trainers this country has ever seen and his record proves it.”

The five-year-old justified her favouritism to join Choisir (2003) and Takeover Target (2006) as Australian winners of the King’s Stand Stakes, setting a new 1000m track record of 57.44 seconds along the way.

She defeated Ireland’s Dandy Man by 1-3/4 lengths with Australians Magnus third and Takeover Target fourth.
